I'm re-watching Buffy Season 5 for the first time in ages but my memory is Ben was a good counterpart to Dawn. They were both created to inhibit Glory which in fact tied their innocent lives to a sadistic, insane, unstoppable god. Ben does try to protect Dawn and the world throughout the season. .
